COMMON THEMES - The Bear
| Bears and bear chases are very common carnival figures throughout Europe. The Bear is thus chased, tamed and “shaved”, that is reduced to reason. The representation of The Bear may or may be not naturalistic, so that the “bear” itself may in fact be a simple sheaf of rye or corn, as a further testimony of the ancient agrarian magic that supersedes to these rites. |
